One8 funded two pilot cohorts of schools using high dosage early literacy tutoring to test whether a model for a first-grade literacy safety net could achieve reading gains without the challenges that have plagued other in-person tutoring programs. The goal of this pilot program was to test if daily, in-school tutoring could help build foundational skills, allowing first-grade students with documented literacy gaps to reach grade level by the end of the year. An SY24 evaluation found that on average, students gained over 5 additional months of learning compared to national norms. The SY25 findings are similarly strong, with additional findings related to how student remain on grade level in second grade even after tutoring has ended. Of the tutored 1st grade students who finished SY24 on grade level, 85% finished 2nd grade reading on grade level in SY25. Read the full report on outcomes from the 2024-25 school year.

Efforts to raise awareness about the results of this work contributed to the inclusion of $25M for high-dosage tutoring in the Governor’s FY26 budget, securing public funding for 10,000 seats statewide in SY26.
