Volunteer Opportunities for School Year 2025-26

Join us by volunteering to support and inspire the next generation of professionals [please note: this registration is for our industry volunteers; educators – registration will open for you in the coming weeks]

  • Give students feedback on their Capstone projects.
  • Share experiences from your work and career pathway.
  • Develop students soft skills (e.g. meeting facilitation, professional emails).

High school seniors from across Massachusetts complete year-long capstone projects. These students are working in teams on complex, open-ended projects that address real-world problems. As a mentor, your experience and expertise will help these students make their projects great. You’ll also be able to coach them on professional skills like collaboration, communication, and project management to set them up for success in their future careers. Here’s what you can expect from the experience:

  • Receive your student team match by November 17th
  • Meet with students at least once a month, virtually or in person, for 30 – 60 mins
  • Connect with student teams via email as needed

Event FAQs

What kinds of projects will students be working on?

  • Example engineering project here.
  • Example biomed project here.

How does matching work? We will use the preferences you submit to finalize matches.

Will you provide training to volunteers? Yes, in additional to general guidance, Jake Friedman ([email protected]) is available to provide support throughout the program.

What schools are these students from? The One8 Applied Learning Hub supports public schools across Massachusetts, with a particular focus on students furthest from opportunity.

What is Applied Learning? Applied Learning is a research-backed educational approach that is proven to work for all students. In an Applied Learning classroom, students actively drive the learning. They use content knowledge, critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork, grappling with meaningful problems and creating solutions they are invested in.

What is the One8 Applied Learning Hub? The One8 Foundation is committed to identifying and funding proven Applied Learning programs that inspire students with innovative, engaging ways to approach core and elective subject matter. At the One8 Applied Learning Hub, we’re here to help Massachusetts schools get the most out of those programs by providing implementation support, educator community building, programming support, and student opportunities that help bring their learning to life. We currently partner with nearly 700 schools across more than 200 districts and look forward to building new partnerships across the Commonwealth.

Event FAQs

What types of professionals are you looking for? All are welcome! We want to expand students’  horizons and help them discover the diverse ways that they can apply what they are learning in school.  Many projects have a STEM focus, so volunteers whose careers have a STEM component or who work  in a STEM industry are especially needed – especially medical professionals. Students will also bring civics & history projects, great for lawyers, communications professionals, etc.

What projects will I see at the Showcase? Students will bring projects representing a variety of disciples, primarily STEM (think: app design, engineering prototypes, medical diagnoses and treatment plans, and much more) but also civics & history. Projects range in sophistication from elementary math to 12th-grade capstone projects in engineering and biomedical innovation.

Will you provide training to volunteers? At the start of the day we’ll give brief context for student projects and go over everything you’ll need for the day.

Can I share this opportunity with people in my network? Yes! Please feel free to share this opportunity with anyone who would be interested. We are expecting around 500 teams of students and would love to connect them with more industry professionals at the event.

How can I get my company involved? Reach out to, or connect your employee engagement team lead with, Jake at [email protected] to discuss partnering. At groups of 10+ volunteers we’re happy to recognize company impact on students through inclusion in the program, with increasing levels of recognition during the event and in media outreach with more volunteer engagement.
